Swimming pools are one of the most common places where drowning incidents occur, especially for young children. Following a few essential safety practices can greatly reduce the risk and help everyone enjoy the water safely.

Pool Safety Tips

• Always supervise children closely. Never leave a child unattended near or in a pool.
• Install proper barriers. Pools should have a fence with a self-closing and self-latching gate.
• Learn CPR and basic water rescue skills.
• Remove toys from the pool when not in use so children are not tempted to reach for them.
• Avoid distractions. Stay off your phone while supervising swimmers.
• Use properly fitted life jackets for inexperienced swimmers.

Pool Chemical Safety

Pool chemicals are added to pools, hot tubs and spas, and water playgrounds to protect swimmers from germs and prevent outbreaks. Other pool chemicals help with the disinfection process (for example, pH control). Pool chemicals can also improve water quality, stop corrosion and scaling of equipment, and protect against algal growth.

But pool chemicals can injure people when mixed together or when appropriate personal protective equipment is not used when handling them. Review our recommendations to help you use chemicals safely.

Beach Safety

Beaches can be beautiful and fun, but ocean conditions such as waves, tides, and rip currents can change quickly. Understanding beach safety helps prevent dangerous situations.

• Swim at beaches with lifeguards whenever possible.
• Pay attention to warning flags and posted safety signs.
• Never swim alone. Always use the buddy system.
• Stay aware of rip currents and strong waves.
• Keep children within arm’s reach in the water.
• Avoid swimming during storms or rough conditions.

Alpha2H20 is an offshoot extended program from my initial Alpha2 International organization. Alpha2 International was initiated by a group of professional rescuers to train, educate and mentor future and veteran first responders. Lifeguards, emergency medical technicians, firefighters, paramedics, police officers and military special operators are unique individuals that have been called to serve and protect our communities worldwide.

We are the one percent of our population that decided to run towards our fellow man in need of help during extreme danger. Alpha2 International founded Ense-Lifeguards, the first Junior Lifeguard and Cadet Program in Ensenada Baja California Mexico and partnered with the Ensenada Fire Department Lifeguard Division to assist with their efforts in saving lives. EnseLifeguards also participated with the Tijuana and Rosarito Lifeguard Divisions in mutual aid for major emergency incidents within the State of Baja California.

Natural bodies of water like rivers and lakes can present hidden dangers such as strong currents, cold water, sudden drop-offs, and underwater obstacles.

• Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket, especially when boating or near deep water.
• Be cautious of currents and changing water levels.
• Never dive into unfamiliar water where rocks or debris may be present.
• Watch for slippery rocks, docks, and banks.
• Stay alert for boats, jet skis, and other watercraft.
• Avoid alcohol when swimming or supervising others.
